Words Left

About Words Left

Words Left is a platform for leaving encrypted messages to the people you love — messages that are delivered only after you're gone.

We believe everyone has something they couldn't say in life. A secret, a confession, an apology, words of love, or simply the truth. Words Left gives you a way to make sure those words still reach the right person.

Why Words Left exists

Research consistently shows that one of the most common regrets of the dying is not having expressed their true feelings. Many people carry words they never said — words of love, apology, forgiveness, or truth — to their final days.

Modern grief psychology recognizes that maintaining a connection with someone who has passed is not only normal but a healthy part of healing. This is known as the Continuing Bonds theory — the idea that our relationships with the deceased evolve rather than end.

At the same time, a significant number of bereaved individuals report unresolved issues with the person they lost. These unfinished conversations can complicate grief and make healing harder.

Words Left exists to bridge this gap. We give people a secure, private way to ensure their most important words still reach the right person — even after they're gone. No one should leave this world with words left unsaid.

How we protect you

Your messages are encrypted in your browser before they ever reach our servers. We use AES-256-GCM encryption — the same standard used by banks and governments. No one, including us, can read your messages.

There are no accounts. You access your message with a cryptographic edit code, and your recipient opens it with a passphrase you give them in person, combined with email verification.

Free forever

Words Left is free to use and sustained by voluntary donations. We believe a service like this should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation.

Open source ready

Our entire codebase is designed to be self-hostable. If this platform ever shuts down, anyone can run their own instance. Your messages are encrypted — they're safe regardless of who operates the server.
